Media and the Middle East – Hamburg University
This course explores the multifaceted relationship between media and politics in the Middle East, focusing on three primary areas. First, it examines contemporary Middle Eastern media and its intricate relationship with politics, analyzing the media's impact on society, political processes, public opinion, and social movements, as well as how political actors use media to advance their agendas. Second, the course studies how media portrays and shapes understanding of the Middle East, analyzing the reproduction of specific narratives about the region. Third, it investigates the role of digital media in driving political change, with a focus on social media's influence during the Arab Spring and its use by groups such as Hamas, ISIS, and al-Qaeda. The course examines how these movements have transformed relationships between media, the public, and governments both nationally and transnationally.
Specialized Language in Media
This course aims to introduce students to media terminology and writing in English, specifically designed for MA students in the Public Relations and Media program at Gaza University. Students will explore media and public relations topics through texts from news, radio, films, TV, Internet, blogs, and other press issues, focusing on translating these into English. The course includes discussions, translation practice, and writing assignments related to media translation. Emphasis is placed on the socio-cultural, linguistic, and technical dimensions of media translation. Students will learn key media-related language and phrases through intensive exercises, translating various articles and reports between Arabic and English. The course treats media translation as an art rather than a literal process, covering diverse themes, topics, terms, and aspects of media, public relations, and news.
Diplomacy and International Relations
This course provides a comprehensive overview of diplomacy, international relations, the international political system, and the factors influencing global interactions, with a special focus on the role of media. It aims to enhance students' theoretical and practical knowledge in the field by studying fundamental principles and the economic, cultural, political, and historical impacts on global diplomacy. Students will explore how media influences international relations and diplomacy, including the representation and framing of international events. They will develop analytical skills by critically analyzing current international events and trends through the lens of media coverage, and practical skills through simulations and exercises in negotiation, conflict resolution, and diplomatic communication. The course also covers research methodologies for independent projects and includes discussions on contemporary issues such as global security, international law, and human rights, with a focus on how these issues are portrayed in the international media. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for careers in international affairs, policy analysis, media analysis, or further academic research.
Media Topics in English
This course provides an overview of key topics, concepts, and terminology in mass communication, journalism, and mass media theories, with a particular emphasis on international and new media, all presented in English. It aims to enhance students' language and communication skills to prepare them for careers in journalism and communication. Through a selection of texts, students will gain practical experience that bridges theoretical knowledge with language competence. The course objectives include understanding fundamental terms and concepts in journalism and mass communication, recognizing the role and forms of mass media in society, differentiating between various types of media, and demonstrating knowledge of major mass communication theories. Students will also develop their ability to read and respond to news texts and improve their language skills through diverse activities. By integrating theoretical insights with practical language exercises, the course also explores how international media influences and is influenced by global communication trends, equipping students for the dynamic field of journalism and mass media.
The Specialized Journalism
The Specialized Journalism course focuses on critical discourse analysis in social media, emphasizing the use of discourse analysis as a qualitative and interpretive research method. This course aids master's students in developing their research skills by guiding them through the processes of data collection, analysis, and critique from social media platforms. Students will delve into the role of media in shaping societal perspectives and will also examine Palestinian and Israeli media, along with key phenomena in Arab and international media. The course emphasizes how new media influences traditional media and the broader public sphere, providing students with a comprehensive view of media dynamics within a regional and global context.
Graduate Research Projects
This course is designed to guide graduate students through the process of conducting independent research in their field of study. Media Production & Broadcasting Seminar
This course is an advanced course that explores the key aspects of media production and broadcasting. Students will engage with practical and theoretical elements of media creation, including content development, production techniques, and broadcasting strategies. The seminar covers various forms of media, such as television, radio, and digital platforms, and emphasizes hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment and software. Reading
This course is designed to enhance students' fundamental reading skills with a focus on vocabulary development, understanding denotation and connotation, and improving reading comprehension, fluency, and interpretation. It emphasizes essential techniques such as scanning, skimming, and prediction through extensive reading, while introducing critical analysis skills for various texts. The course aims to help students identify basic and advanced reading skills, improve their ability to read clearly and carefully, and expand their vocabulary through affixation and lexical derivation processes. Students will learn to infer meanings, identify main ideas, and recognize topic sentences and supporting details. They will also practice answering different types of questions, discerning the writer's attitude and point of view, and distinguishing between facts and opinions. Familiarity with scanning and skimming techniques will also be developed.
Listening & Speaking
This course builds upon the skills developed in Listening and Speaking, with the goal of enabling students to speak and understand English proficiently enough to engage in university-level courses across various subjects. Students will practice listening to news bulletins, weather forecasts, and radio interviews with world leaders, and will be required to give oral presentations and participate actively in class discussions.
